Ever since the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party went into a 38-38 seat-sharing alliance in Uttar Pradesh for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, battleground UP has been fertile ground for the worst kind of political rhetoric.
Soon after the SP-SP tie-up announcement, Congress announced that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra would be the Congress general secretary for UP East.
Not a day has passed without some political neta or the other attacking Priyanka Gandhi Vadra with a nasty comment that has reeked of sexism and misogyny.
Today, UP BJP chief MN Pandey took the discourse several notches lower by referring to the infamous guest house incident where Mayawati was heckled by Samajwadi Party workers.
He said, "Meine social media pe dekha ek naujavan ne post kar diya ki Shri Akhilesh ji, Maya ji ko shawl pehna rahe hain, Toh naujavan likhta hai niche - Akhilesh ke mooh se ki...ye wahi shawl hai jo guest house mein pita ji ne utara tha. ("I saw on social media that a youth had posted that Akhilesh ji is wrapping ashawl around Mayawati ji. He wrote in his post, putting words in Akhilesh's mouth: this is the same shawl which my father took off in the guest house.")

Earlier this month, BJP MLA Sadhna Singh slammed Mayawati for joining hands with the party that humiliated her in the 1995 guest house incident. She said Mayawati was worse than a "kinnar" -- or eunuch -- and said she was "neither a man nor a woman".
Sadhna Singh later apologised, saying she had no intention to hurt anyone, and that she "just shared a woman's pain".
