Spain's Rafael Nadal won his 19th Grand Slam title in an extraordinary fashion, beating Daniil Medvedev 7-5,6-3,5-7,4-6,6-4. The Russian showed plenty of mettle in the five-set match, roaring back from two sets down and a break down to force a decider. With his latest 19th Grand Slam singles title, Nadal is just one shy of Roger Federer's all-time men's record. The 33-year-old has now won a record-breaking fifth Grand Slam after turning 30.

Medvedev has produced a stunning six weeks on hardcourts: reaching the Washington final, losing the Montreal final to Nadal in their only prior meeting, and winning the title at Cincinnati. Together with 20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer and 16-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia, Nadal has been part of a historic trio whose members own 54 of the past 65 Grand Slam men's singles titles—including the past 11 in a row. If Medvedev had pulled this off, he would have become the first person outside the 'Super 3' to lay claim to the title since Stan Wawrinka's 2006 win.
In his semi-final clash against against Matteo Berrettini, Nadal was hardly tested after that as he breezed through his opponent 7-6, 6-4, 6-1 to set up a clash with Medvedev. On the other side, Bianca Andreescu, 19-year-old teen from Canada, downed Serena Williams 6-3, 7-5 in the US Open finals to win her first Grand Slam. In the process, she denied Williams her record-tying 24th Grand Slam win. The 19-year-old Andreescu, just the second women's Grand Slam finalist from Canada after Eugenie Bouchard at Wimbledon in 2014, had become the first teen Grand Slam champion since Maria Sharapova won at Flushing Meadows in 2006.
