Makers of Narendra Modi biopic announce cast additions

  1. The cast is led by Vivek Oberoi who plays Prime Minister Narendra Modi
  2. The film was announced earlier this month with a poster release in 23 languages
New Delhi: Work on the biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on in full force. On Tuesday, producer Sandip Ssingh and director Omung Kumar announced additions to the cast of the much-anticipated biopic titled 'PM Narendra Modi'. Apart from Darshan Kumaar and Boman Irani, the multi-starrer will also feature Zarina Wahab, Manoj Joshi, Prashant Narayanan, Barkha Bisht Sengupta, Akshat R Saluja, Anjan Shrivastav, Rajendra Gupta and Yatin Karyekar.
The cast is led by Vivek Oberoi who plays Modi. It is co-produced by his father Suresh Oberoi and Sandip Ssingh, who backed director Omung Kumar’s previous films 'Mary Kom' and 'Sarbjit'. To be shot in Gujarat and across locations within the country, the team has only begun filming and doesn’t have a release date yet.
“A solid star cast with talented actors is the base of an effective cinematic experience. With 'PM Narendra Modi', we have got actors who are not just experienced but also the right mix for a prestigious project like this. I am excited at the prospect of having such a talented cast and to work with them along with Omung," Ssingh said.
The film was announced earlier this month with a poster release in 23 languages by Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. The poster showed a distinctly unrecognizable Oberoi standing in front of the Indian tricolor with a huge crowd carrying the national flag and the rising sun in the background with the words “Deshbhakti Hi Meri Shakti Hai" written on top.
The Modi biopic joins the long list of films currently in the works on political figures. Apart from 'The Accidental Prime Minister' (Manmohan Singh), 'Thackeray' (Bal Thackeray) and 'NTR Kathanayakudu' (NT Rama Rao), all of which released this month, there is also 'Yatra', where actor Mammootty will play late Andhra chief minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. The film is scheduled for February. Projects on Telangana chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao, his Andhra rival N. Chandrababu Naidu and the late Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa have also been announced.
To be sure, director Kumar himself also has a record of biopics, including 'Mary Kom' (2014) on the iconic boxer and 'Sarbjit' (2016) on the Indian man imprisoned and sentenced to death in Pakistan for alleged terrorism.
The film is also male lead Oberoi’s last attempt at salvaging his career. The actor who showed much promise initially with films like 'Company' (2002) and 'Saathiya' (2002), hasn’t seen either a bonafide hit or a solo release in years.
