HIGHLIGHTS

  • Ram's role being played by Narendra Modi: Surendra Singh
  • Rahul Gandhi is Raavan, Priyanka Gandhi is Surpanakha: Surendra Singh
  • Democratic forces have to fight Raavan culture: Surendra Singh
Surendra Singh, a BJP MLA from Uttar Pradesh, says democratic forces have to fight what he calls a "Raavan" culture.
Raavan, of course, is the villain of the Hindu epic Ramayan.
For Surendra Singh, Rahul Gandhi is Raavan. The Congress president's sister Priyanka Gandhi, Singh said, is Surpanakha (Raavan's sister).
And who is Lord Ram?
"Ram's role is being played by Modi," Surendra Singh said. "Raavan is Rahul Gandhi and he has sent his sister in the role of Surpanakha."
All this, a day after a poster depicting Rahul Gandhi as Lord Ram was spotted in Patna!
This month, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was appointed the Congress's general secretary for Uttar Pradesh -- a move that made her entry into politics official. Uttar Pradesh is an important battleground in the upcoming Lok Sabha election, for it has 80 seats -- the highest number for any Indian state.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, who is a senior Congress leader, said Priyanka Gandhi's new role was a "killer blow" for PM Modi and the BJP.
The BJP, on the other hand, said Priyanka Gandhi's appointment showed the "failure" of Rahul Gandhi.
Surendra Singh calling Priyanka Gandhi "Surpanakha" isn't an isolated incident. She has been the target of several personal attacks, including sexists comments, this month.
THE STORY IN A NUTSHELL: With 80 Lok Sabha seats, battleground UP is one of the biggest prizes on the political chessboard this year. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was appointed the Congress's general secretary for eastern Uttar Pradesh this month. She has faced several personal attacks, and now BJP MLA Surendra Singh has called her "Surpanakha".
