The verbal jousting and social-media skewering between the BJP and the Congress, as expected, has intensified ahead of the general elections with Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan the latest to join the war of words.
Mahajan has invited the ire of the Opposition for her remarks on Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's entry into politics. The veteran BJP leader on Thursday said Congress chief Rahul Gandhi cannot handle politics alone and needs his sister's help.
The speaker's remarks comes days after Congress president Rahul Gandhi landed himself in a major controversy when he said that Prime Minister Modi got "a woman" to defend him in Parliament.
National Conference's Omar Abdullah was one of the first ones to react, reminding Mahajan of the importance and impartiality of the high office that she occupies. "Ma'am you are the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Can you save the cheap shots for when you no longer occupy that high office," he tweeted.
On Thursday, while Mahajan congratulated Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia on his appointment as the party's general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh (West), this is what she had to say after Priyanka Gandhi's was named Congress's general secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh (East).
"Priyanka is a good woman. But her appointment also shows Rahul has understood that he cannot do politics alone, so he asked his sister Priyanka to help him," Mahajan told reporters in Indore.
Mahajan, who represents Indore in the lower house of Parliament since 1989, also said that talented people must be given an opportunity to come forward.
"Scindia has been given an important responsibility. I congratulate him because it is a matter of pride for Madhya Pradesh," the veteran parliamentarian said.
Scindia is the Lok Sabha MP from Guna constituency in Madhya Pradesh.
Earlier in the month, Congress president Rahul Gandhi claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi got "a woman" to defend him in Parliament. Rahul claimed that the PM is hiding behind Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
"The watchman with a 56-inch chest ran away and told a woman, Sitharaman ji, defend me. I won't be able to defend myself," the Congress president said in a remark that invited criticisms from several quarters for its sexist undertones.
